JHS Pedals Bonsai

9 February 2018

Following in the footsteps of the Muffuletta (2015), which offers several Big Muff-style pedals in one box, JHS Pedals has now released the Bonsai, a pedal that houses nine Tube Screamer-style overdrives.

Tube Screamer

The Ibanez Tube Screamer was developed in the late 1970s and this overdrive pedal became a classic and it possibly is the most sold guitar pedal in the world. Many other companies made their own versions of the Tube Screamer, some of which became very popular in their own right. JHS has now fitted nine of these Tube Screamer-type overdrives into one green pedal: the Bonsai.

JHS Bonsai

Thorough research was done before creating the Bonsai, as each type of overdrive is an exact replica of the original pedal it was based on. Next to the Volume, Drive and Tone controls, the Bonsai has a selector knob that allows you to choose between the following types of overdrives:

Based on the Boss OD-1 overdrive from 1977, this is an overall brighter mode with slightly more gain. The Tone knob gets bypassed in the this mode.

Based on the original Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer from 1979, this is a classic low gain overdrive with a pronounced midrange.

This mode is based on the Ibanez TS-9 from 1982. It’s similar to the TS-808, but has more pronounced low-mids.

This one is based on the Ibanez Metal Screamer from 1985 and has a higher gain sound with more low end.

Based on the Ibanez TS-10 from 1986, this Tube Screamer variation has a crisp and bluesy sound.

This mode is derived from a Tube Screamer-type pedal made by the Polish company EXAR in 1989. It has a little more gain and a more transparent feel to it.

Based on the hot mode of the Ibanez TS-7 from 1999, this mode has the highest gain sound from all of the TS-sounds in the Bonsai.

Keeley Mod Plus (Keeley logo)
In 2002, Robert Keeley did a mod on the original Tube Screamer that resulted in a tighter sound with smoother highs and mids and a tighter low-end.

This is JHS’s own Strong Mod of the Tube Screamer, something the company has been doing since 2008. It results in a cleaner and overall more powerful overdrive.

All of these Tube Screamer pedals are now available in one little box: the JHS Bonsai!
